Brief Users Guide to List Arithmetic for the   TI-83 Plus/TI-84

Content:  This document covers the arithmetic operations that can be performed on lists.  List arithmetic is a powerful tool for doing
the extensive arithmetic often included in basic statistics courses. 


To facilitate lookup, the instructions are divided into the following categories:

         I.  Entering the List Tables -  Getting to the list tables,
        II.  Clearing a list -  easily clear a list from the list tables,
       III.  Entering Data -  enter data in a the list tables,
       IV.  Square a list - Square each element of a list and store the result in another list,
        V.  Multiplying two lists–
       VI.  Getting the sum of lists –
      VII.  Getting the sum of multiple lists -

General:  The arithmetic of lists is a very powerful tool, especially for elementary statistics taught by those
who choose to go into detailed calculations of variance, standard deviation, and regression analysis. The calculators
mentioned in the title can be used to perform all of the basic mathematical operations on all of the elements of a
a list or of two lists.  Obviously, such operations as squaring all elements or multiplying the elements of one list
by those of another, and even adding the elements of a list can save considerable time.  That save time can be
used to learn important procedures rather than practicing arithmetic.

I.  Accessing List Tables:  Press STAT, ENTER and the lists will be displayed.

II.  Clearing a list:  Move the cursor so that the name is highlighted and press CLEAR, then ENTER.  See Figure 1 below.

III.  Entering Data:  Position the cursor where you want to enter data, enter the number, and press ENTER.

IVSquaring the numbers in a list: Suppose we want to square the numbers in L1 and store the results in L3.   First position the cursor so that the name of the
   destination list is highlighted (L3 in this example.).  Next press 2ND, L1,x², ENTER.  The operation will be displayed at the bottom of the screen.  (See Figure 2 below.) 
   Press ENTER to store the numbers in L3.

 Ex: 2 Square L2 and store in L4:  Move the cursor to highlight the name of list L4. Press 2nd, L2, x².  (See Figure 3 below.)  Press ENTER to store the
squared data in L4.

V.  Multiplying two lists:  Suppose we want to multiply two lists, for example “x” in L1 times y in L2, and store the results in L5.  Move the cursor so that
the name for L5 is highlighted.  Press
2nd, L1,x (multiply sign),2nd, L2.  (See Figure 4 below.)  Now press ENTER and the products will be stored in L5

VIGetting the sum of a list:  You must first get out of the list Edit function by pressing 2nd, QUIT (the MODE key).  The list menu will be displayed.  Move
the cursor over to MATH (see figure 5 below) and press 5 to paste “sum(“ to the home screen.  (See Figure 6 below.)  Now, press 2nd, L1 (the number 1 key),
and ENTER.  The sum will be displayed as in Figure 6 below.

VII.  Getting the sums of the remaining lists:   You need not go through all of the steps again.  Merely press 2nd, ENTER to redisplay the entry for the
sum of L1.  Now, position the cursor so that L1 is highlighted and press 2nd, L2 .  Press ENTER to get the sum of L2.  Repeat these steps for each list.  Part
of the final screen is displayed in Figure 6 below.

Printing Hint:  Most browsers will send both the navigation bar and the text to the printer, and, as a result, some printers will cut off the right edge of this document
 if  the file is printed directly.  To prevent this, you can use landscape, of course.   But if you'd like to get rid of the navigation panel,  highlight the instructions portion
only (not the navigation panel) and check "Selection" on the Print dialog box; then click "Apply."  This will eliminate the navigation panel and get all of the instructions
on the printed pages.  Some newer printers have a special Web Page function for printing that will print the page without cutting part of it off.
